Dr. Joseph Picken is a member of the faculty of the Naveen Jindal School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas. He is the Founder and Academic Director of the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UT Dallas (IIE), a founder of the Texas University Network for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and an active angel investor. Over the past thirteen years, as Program Director, Dr. Picken and his colleagues have built a leading academic program in innovation and entrepreneurship with more than 1,200 students enrolled annually in 19 graduate and 10 undergraduate courses. In January 2014, UT Dallas’ MSIE program was recognized by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) as the 2014 National Model Master’s Program. The academic program was also recognized in 2014 by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) for “excellence in entrepreneurship teaching and pedagogical innovation.” In 2009, UT Dallas was recognized by the GCEC for “outstanding contributions to advance the discipline of entrepreneurship.” In 2008, UT Dallas and the IIE received the Tech Titan Technology Advocate award for its leadership in the North Texas community. Dr. Picken holds an AB in Economics from Dartmouth College, an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma academic honor society. Prior to joining UT Dallas, Picken taught for several years at Southern Methodist University and enjoyed a 30 year business and consulting career. He has served as CFO of major operating units of several Fortune 200 corporations, held CEO/COO positions in two NASDAQ companies, and has been involved in two IPOs and several successful corporate turnarounds. He is the co-author of two books and has published numerous articles in trade and professional journals. Dr. Picken is married to Marcia Messinger and resides in Dallas, Texas.
